Mold identification to the species level is critical for food safety, spoilage analysis, environmental monitoring, and regulatory compliance. Accurate identification helps distinguish between harmless spoilage organisms and toxigenic or allergenic species, guiding corrective actions and risk assessments.

Testing Workflow

  1. Preliminary Microscopic Evaluation: Observes hyphal structure, spore morphology, and conidiophore patterns under bright field or phase contrast.
  2. Culture-Based Isolation: Samples are plated on specific fungal media like DRBC or MEA and incubated under controlled conditions.
  3. Macroscopic Colony Analysis: Assesses pigment, growth pattern, reverse coloration, and surface texture.
  4. Species Identification:
    • Morphological Characterization (using fungal keys and reference guides)
    • Molecular Techniques such as PCR or ITS sequencing for genetic confirmation
  5. Mycotoxin Potential Screening (if relevant): Uses ELISA or LC-MS/MS to detect toxin production capability.
